It’s a fun challenge to make a video and see if it will catch on with viewers. Kara: I think it was the fact that YouTube is a great outlet for a cappella music. Spencer: I’m very new to the a cappella genre but I was totally hooked once I started collaborating with Backtrack. I believe we’re able to do both through YouTube. It’s not easy finding a good musical outlet post-college and it’s even harder to find an audience. What inspired you to get involved in the contemporary a cappella scene?Īndrew: Kara, Brett, Carly and I all sang in college a cappella groups and we all wanted to continue to sing after graduating. Spencer: Bon Jovi, Disney songs, Boyz II Men.Ĭarly: “Love Will Find a Way” by Christina Aguilera….or really anything by Her. Kara: “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” by Meatloaf, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler, “Seven Bridges Road” by the Eagles. There’s also tons of 90s/early 00s alt rock and pop music that is nostalgic to our generation. A lot of the older repertoire has been covered by many a cappella groups so the challenge would be to take these songs and do something that hasn’t been done.Īny particular older songs you’d like to cover?Īndrew: There is just so much great music from the 60’s and 70’s that I personally love and would want to cover (The Beatles, Billy Joel, Simon & Garfunkel). We believe the best way to do this is to cover popular songs that many people know and to cover them while they are still popular (on the radio).
You guys have been covering more contemporary top 40 mainstream songs….any chance of a throwback cover any time soon?Īndrew: Yes, definitely! Right now we’re trying to build a YouTube and Facebook following as quickly as possible. After doing a few videos with Spencer, we found that he would be a good VP fit for the future. We were looking for someone who is talented but also who was excited about what we were doing and who was a compatible personality. We had them come in to record and film a video but also to get to know each of them. When we first started rehearsing, we didn’t have a beatboxer, so we contacted a number of the talented beatboxers in the NYC area. Why is that?Īndrew: Spencer is our permanent beatboxer for the future. I’ve noticed that some of your videos have different beatboxers than the other ones. Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to chat with me…Love your sound!
